Remove or change many links at once, and tidy up after a deleted post
The free plugin shows every link in and out of a post, and you change them one at a time in the editor. Silotree Pro removes or repoints many in one batch, takes the links to a trashed post out of your other posts, and keeps Link fixes short. You see every change first, and Undo takes each batch back.
- Silotree Pro installed and active beside the free plugin. It comes with every paid plan and the free trial.
- A WordPress user who can edit other people’s posts, such as an Editor or Administrator. The two automatic settings need an Administrator.
Steps
Tick links on a post’s Links screen
In your posts list, hover over a post and click Links. The screen lists every link out of the post and every post that links in. With Pro, each link between your own posts has a checkbox. Links to other sites have none: they are not Silotree’s to change.
Remove them, or change where they point
Tick the links, then press one of:
- Remove link, keep the words. You see the ticked links and how many posts they are in. Untick any to keep, then press Remove the ticked links, keep the words. Their words stay as plain text.
- Change where they point…. Each ticked link gets a box for its new address: type the post’s address, such as
/new-guide/, or pick it from the list. Tick Remove instead to keep only the words, or leave a row empty to leave that link alone. Press Preview the changes: each row says which post it will point at, or why it won’t change. Nothing is written until you press Make changes.
A new address must be a published post or page on your site. If a post links to the same address twice, both links change.
Remove every link to one address
Open Silotree → Manage links and paste an address on your site, or pick one from Addresses your posts link to that go nowhere. You can also press Remove every link to this post… on a post’s Links screen, or Every link to it beside a broken link.
Every post that links there is listed with the words each link is on, all ticked. Untick any you want to keep, then press Remove the ticked links, keep the words. One batch covers 80 posts; press again for the rest.
Take out the links to a post you trash
When you move a post to the trash, Silotree notes which posts link to it. On the posts list, a notice says how many links now go nowhere, with Remove those links and Leave them. Reports lists every trashed post whose links are still waiting, for 30 days.
To have this happen on its own, open Silotree → Settings and tick Remove links to trashed posts automatically under When a post goes in the trash. The links then come out a day later, if the post is still in the trash, and the next notice says what was removed, with Undo. Before anything is removed, each address is checked again: a link whose address is a published post by then is left alone. If you restore the post, the notice offers Put those links back.
Snooze, auto-fix and check videos on Link fixes
On Silotree → Link fixes, tick links and press Snooze for 30 days to take them off the list without changing anything. Show them again brings every snoozed link back early. Reports still counts them as broken.
In Silotree → Settings, Broken links to a moved page has Fix them automatically when it is safe. Once a day, a broken link whose old address your site already redirects to a published post is pointed at the new address. Only a redirect that leaves no doubt counts: exactly one post once had that old address, or one plain permanent (301 or 308) redirect in an enabled group of the Redirection plugin. It happens only after two checks, at least six hours apart, found the same address. It runs as the administrator who turned it on, and never removes a link. If you undo one of its batches, those links are snoozed for 30 days and not fixed automatically again for a year.
The YouTube videos card on the same screen lists videos in your posts that YouTube says were removed or are private (Removed or private), and embeds whose owner turned off playing on other sites (Will not play here). It checks a few dozen videos a day, or press Check videos now. Fix each one in the editor.
Undo any batch from Silotree → Undo history
Every batch is in Silotree → Undo history under what it was: Links removed or changed in bulk, Links to a trashed post removed or Broken links to moved pages, fixed automatically. Undo puts every post back in one click, and works with the free plugin alone.
What you should see
The links you chose are gone or point where you said, your other posts no longer send readers to a trashed post, and Link fixes shows only what still needs you. The Links screen shows the change straight away.
If it doesn’t work
- “No published post or page has that address”
The new address must be a published post or page on your site. Check the address in the post’s View link, or pick the post from the list under the box.
- “That link is no longer in the text of this post”
Someone changed the post since the last scan, or the link is in a menu, widget or button rather than in the text. Only links in the text are changed. Save the post once to update its Links screen.
- “This site’s plan does not include Silotree Pro right now”
Nothing was changed. Check your plan in Silotree under Plan and billing, and that the free plugin is connected. Each link can still be changed in the editor with the free plugin.
- Some links were not changed
The result lists each one with the reason. Posts on the never-link list, posts someone else is editing, and posts built with an unsupported page builder are left alone. See a link didn’t land.
Without Pro, the Links screen and Link fixes are the same lists without checkboxes, and every link can be changed or removed in the editor. Fix in editor beside each broken link stays free.
Questions
What happens to the words when a link is removed?
They stay, as plain text. Only the link around them goes. Every post gets a revision before it changes, and Undo puts the link back exactly as it was.
Can I point a link anywhere?
Only at a published post or page on your own site. An address on another site, a draft, an address with nothing on it, or the post itself is refused, with the reason, before anything is written.
What does “fix moved links automatically” change?
Only broken links whose old address your site already redirects to a published post, through WordPress’s own old-address redirect or the Redirection plugin, and only after two daily checks at least six hours apart found the same new address. It never removes a link.
Does the YouTube check change my posts?
No. It lists videos YouTube says were removed or are private, and embeds whose owner turned off playing on other sites. You replace or remove them in the editor.
What happens if my plan ends?
The batch buttons and the automatic settings stop. Everything already changed stays, and every batch can still be undone from Undo history with the free plugin alone.
