Link a new post in its first week
A new post goes live with nothing linking to it, and usually links to nothing. For its first 7 days, This week puts a few links in front of you each way: older posts that should link to it, and posts it should link to. You approve them there and write them from Links → To add.
Steps
Leave Suggest links to new posts on
In Silotree, open Site settings at the foot of the sidebar and go to Automation. Suggest links to new posts when they’re published is on unless you turned it off. It needs the WordPress plugin connected, because the plugin is what tells Silotree a post went live; without it the switch is off and says why (see connect WordPress).
With it on, about two minutes after you publish, Silotree reads the new post and looks for older posts that already contain words naming it. It proposes up to five links from them into the new post and adds them to Links → To add. A post that asks not to be indexed, or looks like an about, contact or legal page, gets none. Links out of the new post come with your next scan.
Open Link your new post on This week
Open This week. For a post published in the last 7 days that has links waiting, Link your new post lists two groups under the post’s title:
- Older posts that should link to it: up to three, one link from each older post.
- Posts it should link to: up to three, each to a different post, in a different paragraph of the new post, on different words.
Only links whose words name the post they lead to are shown here, strong matches first. Other links to or from the post may still wait in Links → To add. With several new posts, the three newest are shown. Without the plugin, or with the switch in step 1 off, a post counts as new from the scan that first finds it.
Approve or skip each link
Each card is the sentence, with the words that would become the link. Press Approve or Skip; a decided card keeps an Undo. On a paid plan or during the trial, Approve all 4 next to the post’s title approves every card still open for that post. Approving only saves your choice: nothing changes on your site yet.
Write them from Links → To add
Once you approve one, the card says 1 approved and saved. Press Write them from Links → (or See them in Links → while WordPress is not connected). It opens Links → To add on the New posts filter, where the bar at the foot holds your approved links and Write to WordPress writes them, as one batch you can undo (see write and undo batches).
A post is new the same way everywhere: the plugin reported it as published, or a scan after your site’s first one found it. This week looks back 7 days. The New posts filter looks back 30: it shows the links suggested when a post was published, and every link to a post that is new in the last 30 days.
In WordPress, the moment you publish
In the block editor, the plugin asks the same question as you publish: Published. Link your new post. lists older posts that should link to it and posts it should link to, and adds each link straight away when you press Add link. See the editor sidebar. Once Silotree has read the post, the prompt offers Silotree’s picks, chosen the same way as on This week; before then, the plugin finds its own from your post titles.
With Silotree Pro, a keyword rule set to Apply to new posts when they’re published works differently: it adds its link to the new post by itself, a few minutes after its first publish, with nothing to approve.
What you should see
The links are in your posts and the batch is listed on Links → Written. A post you have linked drops off Link your new post once nothing waits for it, and after 7 days in any case.
If it doesn’t work
- Link your new post doesn’t appear
It shows only after your site’s first scan, for posts published in the last 7 days that have a link waiting whose words name the post. If you published the post before connecting WordPress, the next scan finds it. If no older post mentions it yet, nothing can link to it; link out from it in the editor instead.
- The links suggested on publish disappeared
Turning off Suggest links to new posts when they’re published hides those links at once, including ones already waiting. Turn it back on and they return. Links your scans found stay either way.
Questions
How many links does it show?
Up to three each way for each post: three older posts that should link to it, one link from each, and three posts it should link to, each in a different paragraph and on different words. With several new posts, the three newest are shown. Only links whose words name the post they lead to are offered here; any others stay in Links → To add.
Is it on the free plan?
Yes. The card and the publish setting work on every plan, and approving is free. On a paid plan or during the trial, Approve all approves a post's links together. Writing uses your plan's writes like any other link.
Does it write anything by itself?
No. Every link waits for you to approve it and press Write to WordPress. Only a Silotree Pro keyword rule set to apply to new posts adds links by itself.
What does turning off Suggest links to new posts change?
Silotree stops reading posts as they are published, and the links it suggested that way are hidden at once. The plugin's publish prompt still appears, and links your scans find for the new post still show on This week and Links → To add.
