Link many posts at once, and keep links working when a post moves
Silotree Pro does in one batch what the free plugin does one post at a time: links for the posts nothing links to, broken links fixed, and links pointed at a post’s new address when you change it. Every batch can be undone in one click.
- Silotree Pro installed and active beside the free plugin. It comes with every paid plan and the free trial.
- A WordPress user who can edit other people’s posts, such as an Editor or Administrator. The bulk tools are hidden from other roles.
Steps
Open Silotree → Bulk linking, or tick posts on Reports
In WordPress, open Silotree → Bulk linking. It lists the posts nothing links to, longest first, up to 20 at a time. Each one shows the older posts that already use its title’s words, with the sentence each link would sit in.
To pick the posts yourself, open Reports, tick the posts in the list of posts nothing links to, and press Add suggested links….
Untick any link you don’t want, then add the rest
Every suggested link starts ticked, and nothing has been written yet. Untick any you don’t want, then press Add the ticked links. They go in as one batch, with a revision of each post first, and the result says which landed and why any did not.
Fix broken links in a batch
Open Silotree → Broken links and tick the links to fix, then press one of:
- Point at the new address, for a page that has moved and that your site already redirects (WordPress’s own old-address redirect, or the Redirection plugin). Rows like that say Moved to and the new address before you tick them.
- Remove link, keep the words, for a page that is gone for good.
A link with no known new address is never pointed anywhere: it is refused, and you can remove it or fix it in the editor. Fix in editor beside each link stays free.
Let links follow a post when its address changes
Change a published post’s permalink, or move a page under another one, and Silotree finds the links to the old address in your other posts and points them at the new one, in the background. A notice says when it is done, with an Undo button for the person who made the change or an administrator.
It is on once Pro is installed. To turn it off, open Silotree → Settings and untick Update links in my other posts to the new address under When a post’s address changes. Only links to your own posts, in the text, are changed.
Undo any batch from Silotree → Undo
Every Pro batch appears in Silotree → Undo with what it was, for example Bulk linking: links to unlinked posts or Broken links fixed in a batch. Undo takes the whole batch back out in one click, and works with the free plugin alone.
What you should see
The posts that had no way in now have links from older posts, broken links point somewhere or are plain words again, and a post you move keeps its links. Your next scan counts them, see the links report for each post.
If it doesn’t work
- “No older post mentions these yet”
A link needs words an older post already has. Write a sentence that mentions the post in a related one, and it will be offered next time.
- “This site’s plan does not include Silotree Pro right now”
Nothing was written. Check your plan in Silotree under Settings → Plan & billing, and that the free plugin is connected. Each link can still be added or fixed one at a time with the free plugin.
- Some links were not added
The result says why for each. No post gets more than six Silotree links, posts on the never-link list are left alone, and words that changed since the review are refused rather than guessed. See a link didn’t land.
When you publish a post, the publish prompt lists older posts that should link to it. With Pro, tick the ones you want and press the button, for example Add all 3 selected, to add them as one batch.
Questions
How many posts does one batch cover?
Up to 20 unlinked posts, with the strongest few suggested links for each. Run it again for the next 20. A broken-links batch fixes up to 80 links.
Will it put too many links in a post?
No. Pro writes through the free plugin, so its rules hold: no more than six Silotree links in any post, the never-link list, the language checks and a revision before each post changes.
Who can use these tools?
Bulk linking and the broken-link batches need a WordPress user who can edit other people’s posts, such as an Editor or Administrator. Turning off links that follow a moved post needs an Administrator.
What happens if my plan ends?
The batches are no longer offered and moved posts are no longer followed. Everything already written stays, and every batch can still be undone with the free plugin alone.
